About the Role

The Swim School Assistant Centre Manager plays a key leadership role in the delivery of the City of Sydney’s Learn to Swim and aquatic programs. This position supports the Centre Manager by overseeing the day-to-day operation of the Swim School while contributing to centre-wide outcomes across customer experience, safety, compliance, participation and revenue.

 

The Swim School ACM provides operational leadership, supervises and develops swim school staff, coordinates program delivery and ensures a high-quality, safe and inclusive experience for all participants. In the absence of the Centre Manager, the Swim School ACM is responsible for leading centre operations and staff.

 

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Operations

  • Lead by example in the delivery of safe, high-quality learn-to-swim programs.
  • Support the Centre Manager in the day-to-day management of the facility and assume leadership responsibility in their absence.
  • Coordinate Swim School operations including class scheduling, bookings, enrolments, staffing and program delivery.
  • Manage swim teacher rosters to ensure operational coverage and program continuity.

Safety, Risk & Compliance

  • Promote and maintain a strong safety culture in line with WHS legislation, NSW Health regulations and Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations.
  • Ensure Swim School and aquatic programs are delivered in accordance with relevant industry standards and accreditation requirements.
  • Maintain Swim School equipment and ensure operational manuals are accurate and up to date.

Program Quality & Community Outcomes

  • Oversee the delivery of engaging, inclusive learn-to-swim lessons that meet community needs and participation targets.
  • Monitor student progress, assess lesson levels and ensure timely communication with parents and carers.
  • Support program planning, development and evaluation to meet established performance indicators, including retention and participation growth.

People Leadership

  • Provide leadership, coaching and support to swim school and casual staff.
  • Assist with recruitment, induction, training and ongoing professional development of swim instructors.
  • Promote teamwork, collaboration and positive communication across the Centre.

Customer Experience & Administration

  • Respond to Swim School enquiries and ensure accurate, timely customer service.
  • Maintain detailed knowledge of Centre programs, memberships, events, entry fees and 360 products.
  • Support administrative processes including reporting, planning and documentation to contribute to Centre-wide objectives.

About You

You are an experienced aquatic professional and emerging leader who brings strong operational knowledge, sound judgement and a customer-focused mindset. You are confident working independently, able to make decisions on site, and understand when escalation is required. You demonstrate flexibility, resilience and adaptability, and are committed to developing people and delivering inclusive community programs in a safety-critical environment.

You will also bring:

  • Demonstrated experience leading or supervising teams in aquatic, health, fitness or related service industries.
  • Strong customer service and sales capability, with experience achieving targets and key performance indicators.
  • Proven ability to motivate teams, manage rosters and support staff performance.
  • A well-developed understanding of WHS, risk management and aquatic compliance frameworks.

Essential Qualifications

  • Full time working rights in Australia
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification
  • Current Working With Children Check and National Police Check

Desirable Qualifications

  • Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety qualification recognised in NSW (Austswim, Royal Life Saving or Swim Australia).
  • Royal Life Saving Pool Lifeguard Certificate (willing to obtain)
  • Royal Life Saving Pool Operations Certificate (willing to obtain)
